Effluent including trade effluent may contain fats, oils and grease, chemicals, detergents, heavy metals, solids, wastewater and food wastes which have the potential to become harmful to the environment and to human health.

Discharge consent regulations require many of these constituents to be monitored on a regular basis prior to and after treatment.
